In the United States alone, approximately $80 billion per year is spent on restorative dentistry.  Much of this cost originates when the oral cavity becomes infected with dental caries (cavities).  Propensity for caries infection varies widely among the population.  If the high-risk patients can be identified and treated before the caries occur, substantial system wide savings can be effected.
